PROBLEM STATEMENT

“We are the most unequal society in the world, gini coeffient of 0.63. We have the highest unemployment rate in the world at almost 30 – 40% (Whether it is expanded definition or not). Unemployment is worse that countries that are at war. We have the highest SMME failure rate in the world. In BRICS new jobs created are North of 60% ditchpoint, in South Africa is South of 15% ditchpoint. We are second to Russia of suicide and GBV not by a factor of 2 but by 5 times the global average.”  Prof Bonang Mohale, President Business Unity of South Africa (BUSA), 2023.05.04. “Most of the crimes in Inanda occurred within homes, leaving police at a distinct disadvantage.  The majority of crimes that happen in Inanda happen indoors and the crimes happen between people who know each other.”  “It’s funny, because you think that alcohol would be a big contributing factor with crime, but when you do an analysis on the causing factors, that may not necessarily be the case. It is more than alcohol alone.” Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, KwaZulu Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, 03 June 2022, News 24. Statistics South Africa also released its Victims of Crime survey report in 2016, indicating that 71.3% of women experience sexual violence while only 28.7% of men experience the same violation. The findings further indicated that female-headed households (FHH) are more at risk, with 61.4% more likely to experience contact crimes such as murder and sexual violence compared to only 38.6% male-headed households i.e. 200 118 of FHH in: Zululand, UMzinyathi, UMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo Districts.
